After earning an MFA at the University of New Mexico, Mark Lavatelli exhibited his work in New Mexico and Texas. He moved to Buffalo in 1988 and shows his work in solo, two-person, and group exhibitions. Made mainly with the ancient medium of encaustic, Lavatelli’s paintings, prints, and installations demonstrate a love of nature and concern for the environment. He also works non-objectively, referencing modernist abstractionists such as Richard Diebenkorn, whose early work he continues to study. Lavatelli writes art reviews for publications in Western New York and is Professor of Art at Medaille College.
