The year moves forward in its usual quick pace and, true to form, the BSA moves right along with it! BSA began 2018 with an exhibition which included new educational events. The Board, the Transition team, Education and Exhibitions Committees are developing several plans for this year so that we can gather with our friends and share our visions and ideas. Events and their dates, times, and venues will be listed on the website, in the newsletter and through e-flashes. Winter Exhibition The Winter Exhibitionin January proved to be another example of the wonderful work of BSA membership. We thank Tim Brooks for organizing this successful exhibition. Juried by Dr. Anthony Bannon, former director of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, the exhibition spotlighted a variety of…

As 2017 comes to an end, a review of our many accomplishments seems fitting. So many things have happened that it is—happily—hard to keep up. Important changes began with the notification of our not-for-profit status. This announcement launched a great deal of exciting ideas and activities. The many educational events for members and the general public were among the most apparent changes. We saw workshops and artists talks associated with exhibitions or in collaboration with Arts Services Initiative and ELAB. The Video Archive Project provided insight into several exceptional artists. A new book project will record the history of BSA and our role in Buffalo’s history. Exhibitions continued with a renewed energy. Communications established a “shorter” version of the newsletter—BSA Update. The website saw some…

Doesn’t it seem that summer just began? As summer slips into fall, BSA is growing into its non-profit organization status. Many changes already have been implemented, while others are being planned and modified to adjust to this new position. Not only has the BSA Transition Team been actively working hard to bring us to this new level as an organization, many activities have been planned to provide our members with exciting new opportunities. It is an exciting time for us. After BSA was formally notified regarding our new status, the board organized a Transition Team. The team is currently reviewing the many organizational modifications that are required. Over the coming months, there will be both obvious changes and several subtle changes. An example of an…

The Buffalo Society of Artists has begun a new era. At the Spring Members meeting on Thursday May 25th Beth Pedersen formally announced that we are now officially a Not For Profit or Public Charity. We thank Beth for working through this challenging application process. Beth has spent several years researching, developing, writing, and working with the membership, the non-profit lawyer and many consultants. The application was submitted in March of this year and we received formal notification of our new status in mid-May. Thanks to Beth and her due diligence, BSA received this status quickly! (For a slightly more detailed explanation of the process, make sure to read Beth’s article on page 4. – ed.) What does this status mean for our organization? It…

The Buffalo Society of Artists entered 2017 with enthusiasm and a flurry of activity. Reading the E-Flashes reminds us all that BSA members have had an exciting start to this year. Congratulations to Brenda Molloy on the amazing works that were the backdrop for the play Dead Man’s Cell Phone presented at the Castellani Art Museum. Gary Wolfe continues to amaze us with his paintings. Gary received notification that his work Ensemble was accepted into the Burchfield Penney’s Permanent Collection. Richard Christian exhibited at the Paula Art House, a venue which has featured exhibitions of many of our members’ work. Cornelia Dohse-Peck exhibited her work at the Carnegie Art Center during February. The Kenan House Gallery’s exhibit Celebrating Alice Pomroy: Women Artists of Western New…

I begin this message with sad news: we recently lost two longtime BSA members: Kaaren Metcalf and Eddie Bisone. Kaaren Metcal: known for her tender and very well-executed portraits, largely of her family, succumbed to complications of chemotherapy. She was ever dedicating herself to the betterment of her talents, and in one particular George Palmer workshop, she did an absolutely superb pastel portrait of my wife, Donna, which she graciously sent to us several months later. I was delighted to award her a Best of Show in the most recent Williamsville Art Society exhibition, a work clearly worth the recognition. Eddie Bisone: for those of us who knew him from when he hung out at Art Dialogue, greeting people, what more needs be said? This…

I’ll open this message by announcing the loss of one of our truly vital members, a real life-force, the scintillating, superbly talented, Priscilla Bowen, who passed away peacefully on September third after a six month long battle with lung cancer. She will be greatly missed, both for her art as well as her presence at art openings. Thank you, Priscilla, for the joy you brought so many of us. Onto more mundane matters. The 119th annual Catalogue Exhibition is chosen, the catalogue is being assembled, the show will soon be hung at the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT), and the winners are…you’ll have to wait until the opening ceremony to find out. Ninety-five artworks. No size restrictions. Quite a challenge to put this…
