About
Elaine Martynkiewicz

This body of work developed from my love of wax and the encaustic technique. The melting, hardening, scraping away and ultimate luster left behind by this ever-changing medium has become the focus of my art making for the past ten years. Using this ancient technique in contemporary ways is especially appealing to me.

From the series Tempus per Annum, this painting, titled "April", explores the passage of time, in particular the idea of Ordinary Time as used in the liturgy of the Roman Rite. By using a grid as calendar, a design created by silhouettes of branches through different seasons and focussing on negative space, I looked to capture an image of a month. In particular a snap shot of the ordinary moments that happen between more celebrated events in a day, month or year.
