June 2009 – George Grace, President
If you haven’t stepped forward to participate in any one of our vibrant committees, you’re missing something special. It’s been two years since you, our members, told the then Board what you want our Society to do and become when you answered the strategic plan questionnaire. You said we needed better publicity, a stronger connection to the community and other arts groups, and improved educational and professional developments through programs, workshops, studio visits, and demonstrations. Thanks to the hard work of the previous and current Board members and officers, and a surprising number of non-board, non-officer volunteers, we are achieving many of these goals, some at breakneck speed. I am honored to serve with these people. We have all benefited from the diligence and tenacity…

Well, after a four year hiatus from the BSA presidency, I’m ba-a-a-c-k (thunder, lightning, heavy rain, ominous music). I’d hoped that my successors from my previous tenure would inspire such large numbers to serve that I’d never be needed to do this job again: members would trip all over themselves to fill this organization’s highest office. But, in addition to the perceived workload, burnout plagues every group: some volunteers can handle it longer than others; some do such intense work over a short term that the burnout rate is faster; and for still others, life just gets in the way. Whatever the reason, the Buffalo Society of Artists, coming into its 125th year in 2016, welcomes, and deeply appreciates, all the help it can get,…
February, 2014 – Richard W. Christian II, President
Despite the mind numbing and cocoon inducing cold of this grueling winter, our volunteer committees and Board of Directors have, not surprisingly, been working tirelessly counter to any expectations of seasonal inertia (doubtless in an effort to stay warm!) In addition to the impressive amount and quality of independent shows from our membership, and following the end of last year’s meeting between the Boards of Directors and Trustees to discuss fundraising strategically, we have seen the very successful drop off and jurying of work for consideration for our upcoming Spring Show to be held at Buffalo Arts Studio, deftly managed by Vice President of Exhibitions, Mark Lavatelli and his Exhibition Committee (a special thank you to BAS Artistic Director Cori Wolff for opening up that…

July 14, 2010 – George Grace, President
July 2010 BSA Newsletter (PDF) This has been an interesting couple of years for the BSA. After a sort of soul-searching foray that we did with the strategic plan, we embarked on a bold course to more clearly define (and redefine) our organization, based on the stated wishes of the majority of our members. There was great wisdom in what you wanted: Better publicity; greater relevance to the community; more exhibitions; professional development. The Board with which I have been honored to serve has worked extremely hard to set these goals in motion, or, where they were already in motion, to make them work better. The changes, where made, weren’t entirely flawless or comfortable for everyone. Bugs had to be worked out, primarily with our…
