As 2017 comes to an end, a review of our many accomplishments seems fitting. So many things have happened that it is—happily—hard to keep up.

Important changes began with the notification of our not-for-profit status. This announcement launched a great deal of exciting ideas and activities. The many educational events for members and the general public were among the most apparent changes. We saw workshops and artists talks associated with exhibitions or in collaboration with Arts Services Initiative and ELAB. The Video Archive Project provided insight into several exceptional artists. A new book project will record the history of BSA and our role in Buffalo’s history. Exhibitions continued with a renewed energy. Communications established a “shorter” version of the newsletter—BSA Update. The website saw some slight changes as well; these changes will help keep members up to date with education and exhibition opportunities.

There were three general member meetings this year. At the Spring Meeting, we announced the 501c3 acceptance. At the Annual Picnic and meeting, members enjoying getting together to see friends while updated on BSA events. There was much information to communicate at the Annual Dinner. Updated information was quickly given to members, new board members were announced, new exhibiting members and their work were introduced, and finally all attending the dinner were mesmerized by our guest speaker, Janne Siren, Director of the Albright-Knox. BSA ends the year on a high note with many great accomplishments.

In 2018, BSA will continue to grow and establish many exciting new events and activities. Much of the plan will provide members with updated information regarding professional growth as artists, and give everyone a variety of opportunities to exhibit their work. The Transition Team will be reviewing policies and procedures to ensure the continued growth of the BSA. The website will be reviewed, looking for ways to update and create changes that will make the site look more current and provide more useful information.

As President, I look forward to seeing a variety of new developments throughout BSA. Some of these changes will be small and very routine, while others will be larger and much more visible. There will be new BSA fundraising activities directed toward VAP, The History Book Project, Education and Exhibitions. After that, we’ll review our website and develop a plan for updating the site.

I want to thank everyone on the Board — both outgoing and incoming. Huge thanks to everyone who has volunteered in so many ways. Without you, our organization could not have provided the many wonderful activities with such a great success. A special thanks to the Trustees, who have consistently offered their support, much invaluable information and suggestions. Without the help of these individuals and the contributions of our members, the BSA would not be such a well-respected and proud member of Buffalo’s art community.

Wishing everyone peace and happiness in the upcoming New Year!
