I’ll open this message by announcing the loss of one of our truly vital members, a real life-force, the scintillating, superbly talented, Priscilla Bowen, who passed away peacefully on September third after a six month long battle with lung cancer. She will be greatly missed, both for her art as well as her presence at art openings. Thank you, Priscilla, for the joy you brought so many of us. Onto more mundane matters. I was in conversation with a longtime BSA member the other day, someone who had been active on the Board and in many other BSA activities. This member said to me, “I joined the Buffalo Society of Artists to further my art career, but I feel that this is where my art career came to die.” This was a disconcerting statement to be sure. As we continued to talk, this member had envisioned the BSA as an organization that would offer the kind of programming, professional development and public exposure that would provide access to the tools and a network of artists to assist in moving forward in personal artistic endeavors. July 2010 BSA Newsletter (PDF) This has been an interesting couple of years for the BSA. After a sort of soul-searching foray that we did with the strategic plan, we embarked on a bold course to more clearly define (and redefine) our organization, based on the stated wishes of the majority of our members. There was great wisdom in what you wanted: Better publicity; greater relevance to the community; more exhibitions; professional development. The Board with which I have been honored to serve has worked extremely hard to set these goals in motion, or, where they were already in motion, to make them work better.
