Finding Meaning in Our Mission by Gary L. Wolfe
As I finished helping install the BSA Spring Exhibition at Artspace, I took a moment to look over the work and was once again struck by the quality, variety and creativity of what our members had made. The Buffalo Society of Artists was born 128 years ago in a response to the assertion that “There is no art in Buffalo!” Today, there is indeed “art in Buffalo,” as we have a vibrant, diverse and energetic art community as well as a wide range of art groups, organizations, galleries and museums. Indeed, the local art landscape and its role in our community continue to morph and grow. We have affirmed in our new mission statement that we “embrace visual exploration as critical to the voice of…

The year moves forward in its usual quick pace and, true to form, the BSA moves right along with it! BSA began 2018 with an exhibition which included new educational events. The Board, the Transition team, Education and Exhibitions Committees are developing several plans for this year so that we can gather with our friends and share our visions and ideas. Juried by Dr. Anthony Bannon, former director of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, the exhibition spotlighted a variety of…

This member said to me, “I joined the Buffalo Society of Artists to further my art career, but I feel that this is where my art career came to die.” This was a disconcerting statement to be sure. As we continued to talk, this member had envisioned the BSA as an organization that would offer the kind of programming, professional development and public exposure that would provide access to the tools and a network of artists to assist in moving forward in personal artistic endeavors. It seemed that this was why this person had become a member and that…

First and foremost, a heartfelt congratulations to the top three award winners in our Spring Show at Project308 Gallery, in order, first to third: Joan Shaw, Michele Agosto, and Norma Joy. Likewise, I applaud those who didn’t win, but who were accepted into the exhibition, and my condolences to those who were not. I say that, of course, tongue-in-cheek, because yours truly fell into that latter category. Such is life. Somehow, the exhibition managed to be very good despite the absence of my artwork. Just in case any of you who don’t know me very well think I’m seriously wallowing in my sorrows over the rejection (sniffle), as we all know, far better artists than any of us have faced similar results from simply trying…
