First and foremost, a heartfelt congratulations to the top three award winners in our Spring Show at Project308 Gallery, in order, first to third: Joan Shaw, Michele Agosto, and Norma Joy. Likewise, I applaud those who didn’t win, but who were accepted into the exhibition, and my condolences to those who were not. I say that, of course, tongue-in-cheek, because yours truly fell into that latter category. Such is life. Somehow, the exhibition managed to be very good despite the absence of my artwork. As 2017 comes to an end, a review of our many accomplishments seems fitting. So many things have happened that it is—happily—hard to keep up. Important changes began with the notification of our not-for-profit status. This announcement launched a great deal of exciting ideas and activities. The many educational events for members and the general public were among the most apparent changes. We saw workshops and artists talks associated with exhibitions or in collaboration with Arts Services Initiative and ELAB. The Video Archive Project provided insight into several exceptional artists. A new book project will record the history of BSA and our role in Buffalo’s history. Exhibitions continued with a renewed energy. The Buffalo Society of Artists is a work in progress. It exists as one of the nation’s oldest arts organizations. The vision of its founders was preserved by capable and conscientious stewards who in turn left it stable and financially healthy, even through the Great Depression. Where many other groups and galleries came and shined a few moments before fading into the amnesiac ether of history, the BSA has been stable and adaptive. When the question is posed: “Are we relevant?” my answer is that resiliency and tenacity must count for something. We have weathered many storms. Transitions are tough.
