Steven Peet is in Kyoto, Japan on a two month residency. He’s trying to paint pictures that capture the place in a way that’s not touristy. He says, “In the work, I want to blur the sense of time and play with with pictorial space and perspective; I want to create more formal compositions that set up opportunities for narrative interpretation.” He lives in a charming traditional house with tatami mats and a squatty potty, and his studio space has large windows that open onto a neighborhood and garden. He hopes his acrylics on hot-pressed Arches watercolor paper will be portable.
