I begin this message with sad news: we recently lost two longtime BSA members: Kaaren Metcalf and Eddie Bisone. Kaaren Metcal: known for her tender and very well-executed portraits, largely of her family, succumbed to complications of chemotherapy. She was ever dedicating herself to the betterment of her talents, and in one particular George Palmer workshop, she did an absolutely superb pastel portrait of my wife, Donna, which she graciously sent to us several months later. I was delighted to award her a Best of Show in the most recent Williamsville Art Society exhibition, a work clearly worth the recognition. With the 2013 year drawing to a close, I feel a great pride and satisfaction in presiding over an organization that has accomplished and continues to accomplish so much, given our diverse membership and volunteer composition, along with a desire to continue to develop and offer more to our membership and the greater Buffalo arts community beyond. Instrumental to this has been the Board that I have been lucky enough to have worked with this past year. I thank all of our Directors, but wish to give special attention to the four members who have just gone off of the Board: Richard Tomasello, Norine Spurling, Catherine Tillou and Paula Sciuk. July 2010 BSA Newsletter (PDF) This has been an interesting couple of years for the BSA. After a sort of soul-searching foray that we did with the strategic plan, we embarked on a bold course to more clearly define (and redefine) our organization, based on the stated wishes of the majority of our members. There was great wisdom in what you wanted: Better publicity; greater relevance to the community; more exhibitions; professional development. The Board with which I have been honored to serve has worked extremely hard to set these goals in motion, or, where they were already in motion, to make them work better.
