The year moves forward in its usual quick pace and, true to form, the BSA moves right along with it! BSA began 2018 with an exhibition which included new educational events. The Board, the Transition team, Education and Exhibitions Committees are developing several plans for this year so that we can gather with our friends and share our visions and ideas. Events and their dates, times, and venues will be listed on the website, in the newsletter and through e-flashes.
Winter Exhibition
The Winter Exhibitionin January proved to be another example of the wonderful work of BSA membership. We thank Tim Brooks for organizing this successful exhibition. Juried by Dr. Anthony Bannon, former director of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, the exhibition spotlighted a variety of works of veteran members and included many of the new members recently juried into the BSA.
The Winter Exhibition held at the Carnegie Art Center included the first Artists Talk for this year. Judy Hodge and Gary Wolfe facilitated a wonderful discussion of their work. These very enjoyable Artists Talks offer much insight into our members’ work and processes. Also during this exhibition, a new event was coordinated with the Carnegie Art Center’s Jazz series – “Live Art/Live Music.” BSA members sat in the audience during a scheduled jazz performance and sketched. BSA participants worked on sketches inspired by the music and musicians. Thanks to Jacqui Welch, Education Chair, for organizing this event.
Coffee House Talks
The first of many Coffee House Talkswas held at Spot Coffee on Delaware Avenue. This is a new event, organized by BSA’s Education Committee, and provides an opportunity for members to gather socially and discuss art. The first Coffee House Talk began with a guided discussion that inspired all to share ideas and return to their studios to work. This new experience is designed to open up dialogue about various views on the visual arts. Many more topics and talks are planned. BSA members are always welcome and are encouraged to bring a friend or interested artist. Watch for e-flashes that will report the time, place and date for the next Coffee House Talk. Jacqui will also list them in the BSA Newsletter, Update and, as always, the website under Education.
Art Flix
The Education committee has also reorganized Art Flix. In the past, this had been a very successful program and many member expressed interest in its revival. The first movie shown wasBasquiat. There are more Art Flix to be scheduled and we look forward to this opportunity to meet with friends to enjoy learning about a favorite artists or artists with which we are unfamiliar.
Online Exhibition
The next exhibition is a very new event. The Online Exhibition will be a new adventure for everyone. As this is very new for us, it will be a work in progress. The main purpose will be to expose BSA’s work to a larger audience. The Online Exhibition will be up for one year and will allow members’ work to be exposed to many more places and for a longer period of time. As it is the first time we will be doing an online exhibition, please take the time to read the prospectus carefully. BSA Daeman Award
On Sunday, February 4, I had the pleasure give the BSA Award to Emma Symons from Clarence High School whose work was exhibited in the Daemen All High Exhibition. It is always an honor to give this award to a talented young artist. The BSA wishes Emma all our best in her future plans.
Volunteering Opportunities
There are so many interesting and wonderful events, exhibitions and gatherings for BSA members. I do hope that you will consider helping one of the committees. There are many “jobs” that are small but help us out a great deal. One of the perks of helping is getting to know other members. I invite everyone to attend our events. Our gatherings encourage many to share new ideas, what they are currently working on, and just have a good time with new and old friends. I hope everyone will consider participating in some way. Many plans are in the works over the next several months. I look forward to seeing you at one or many activities that the committees have worked so hard to organize. The weather should be breaking and we will not be locked in our homes. Hopefully, everyone will be healthy or on the way to full recovery.
