Since first joining the BSA five years ago and then coming onto the Board of Directors over three years ago, I have had the pleasure of serving an artistically diverse and historic organization as it has grown and adapted itself to remain vibrant and relevant while still embracing its great history. It has been this balancing between complementing values which has always seemed to me to be the greatest strength of our group; our capacity to respect and promote all of our styles and approaches to art making while also providing the means to display and integrate our knowledge and talents with our desire to work within a larger, contemporary art community. July 2010 BSA Newsletter (PDF) This has been an interesting couple of years for the BSA. After a sort of soul-searching foray that we did with the strategic plan, we embarked on a bold course to more clearly define (and redefine) our organization, based on the stated wishes of the majority of our members. There was great wisdom in what you wanted: Better publicity; greater relevance to the community; more exhibitions; professional development. The Board with which I have been honored to serve has worked extremely hard to set these goals in motion, or, where they were already in motion, to make them work better. As 2017 comes to an end, a review of our many accomplishments seems fitting. So many things have happened that it is—happily—hard to keep up. Important changes began with the notification of our not-for-profit status. This announcement launched a great deal of exciting ideas and activities. The many educational events for members and the general public were among the most apparent changes. We saw workshops and artists talks associated with exhibitions or in collaboration with Arts Services Initiative and ELAB. The Video Archive Project provided insight into several exceptional artists. A new book project will record the history of BSA and our role in Buffalo’s history. Exhibitions continued with a renewed energy.
