With the end of summer and another successful completion of the Open Members’ Show at the Carnegie Art Center drawing near, we look forward to our juried Catalog Exhibition, Frank Lloyd Wright Fontana Boathouse Art Show and Auction, City of Night and jurying of prospective new members in the fall.
The current uploading of images for entry into the 2013 Catalogue Exhibition at the Kenan Center has been vigorous and promises to give the exhibition’s Juror, George Afedzi Hughes, Associate Professor of Visual Studies at UB, a great deal of extraordinary work to consider. I would ask our membership to likewise consider becoming Patrons for our exhibition themselves and to ask others to do so if they might be so inclined. The importance of funding and involvement in this, our premier show of the year, is always timely and always appreciated.
Our collaboration with the Frank Lloyd Wright Fontana Boathouse’s Art Show last year promises to be equally fruitful with this year’s October show and silent auction. Our support for and involvement with The Boathouse speaks well of our mutual strengths in bridging past, present and future for the visual arts and material culture in the Buffalo/Niagara Region. I would therefore certainly encourage involvement from our members, as exhibitors or volunteers, with this juried show.
I would like to thank Board Member, Sara Zak for all of her good work in organizing and coordinating BSA involvement with City of Night at Silo City. Vice President Paula Sciuk, Recording Secretary Betty Leader, Eileen Graetz and myself have had the pleasure of working with Sara in this collaborative effort and I am happy to say that the BSA will be well represented and promoted at this event, Saturday August 17th from 4:00 pm to 2:00 am the next morning. I hope to and look forward to seeing a great many of you there!
I would also like to thank Publicity Chair, Paul Rybarczyk, for taking point on the Professional Development front in his innovation of the Professional Development section now present in this newsletter. This will provide our membership with opportunities to apply their talents and grow their experience in the visual arts. Gratitude should likewise be expressed to Past President, Beth Pedersen for her continued work with the Video Archive Project and Sylvia Coles for her ongoing volunteer work with the BSA Archives housed at the Burchfield Penney Art Center Archives. A special thank
you needs to be extended to Education Committee Chair, Deb Stewart, for her community outreach work for a second year with the Buffalo Garden Walk.
It is, as always, a great pleasure to serve such a vital and diverse group of creative and productive minds as comprise the Buffalo Society of Artists. I look forward to seeing this membership avail itself of the many opportunities that this coming season promises and in seeing the consistently diverse and extraordinary work that is certain to follow!
