As I finished helping install the BSA Spring Exhibition at Artspace, I took a moment to look over the work and was once again struck by the quality, variety and creativity of what our members had made. The Buffalo Society of Artists was born 128 years ago in a response to the assertion that “There is no art in Buffalo!” Today, there is indeed “art in Buffalo,” as we have a vibrant, diverse and energetic art community as well as a wide range of art groups, organizations, galleries and museums. The Buffalo Society of Artists has begun a new era. At the Spring Members meeting on Thursday May 25th Beth Pedersen formally announced that we are now officially a Not For Profit or Public Charity. We thank Beth for working through this challenging application process. Beth has spent several years researching, developing, writing, and working with the membership, the non-profit lawyer and many consultants. The application was submitted in March of this year and we received formal notification of our new status in mid-May. Thanks to Beth and her due diligence, BSA received this status quickly! I am happy to report that as we move into our summer season, we are doing so with a full itinerary of shows and events for our membership, courtesy of the good work of our Boards of Directors and Trustees. We have our collaborative show with ELAB at Silo City for “Reclaimed City”; our Summer Picnic; our Open Members Show — to be held at the Theodore Roosevelt Historic Inaugural Site — running six weeks through August and into the beginning of September; our Catalogue Exhibition and Eye Candy II art auction and social event to benefit the Artist Portrait Series Video Archive Project, both likewise to be held in September.
