When guitarist Sean Madden first looked through the years of concert video, posters and photos
he had stored away in his studio, he had no idea it would reveal the history, struggles and joys
of playing in the acid jazz power trio, FlashBamPow. The energy of their live performances,
sharp musicianship and raw power hit him in the gut. He sculpted all of this archival material into
the documentary, "Who is FlashBamPow?"
This isn't a string of gratuitous live performances. It's an honest journey into the defiant creative
philosophy of a band known for blending complex jazz fusion, soul-drenched psychedelic
jamming, eastern ragas and old top 40 tunes (remixed in bizarre, twisted ways) all into one
show.
Sean Madden is also an award-winning artist with a wide reputation as a dark surrealist. His
works frequently feature strange, dream-like imagery. The documentary's live sequences are
often punctuated by Madden's incredibly bizarre paintings and drawings.
On February 11th at 7:30 PM "Who is FlashBamPow?" will be shown at Duende, in
addition to an artist talk by Sean Madden. Madden will discuss the origins of his art and music
as a young man growing up in Buffalo before the screening. He will also discuss his battles with
censorship and the importance of creative freedom for all artists.
This documentary provides a story for any creative soul. While there's plenty of hard core
jamming and art in it, it also addresses the desire to create something unique. It shows how
hard it can be to continue doing something simply for the enduring love of it. It addresses how
liberating it can be to embrace creative freedom in a defiant way
