BSA Exhibiting Artist Paula Sciuk will open a collection of new from her Arctic exploration of Svalbard and Iceland at The Phoenix, in Black Rock. “Touching the Edge of the Earth” opens to the public on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 with an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and runs through the end of June.
The images were taken during a monthlong residency at the Gullkistan Center for Creativity, Laugarvatn, Iceland, July 2021 (during Covid) and the Autumn Arctic Circle Residency, October 2022 while onboard the wooden Barquentine sailing vessel, the tall ship Antigua, while traversing the the high arctic. These residencies required comprehensive applications and were highly competitive.
From the Artist:
"It is preferable to be more intimate with the world, to observe and contemplate what is before me, capturing a vanishing moment through field sound and lens based multidisciplinary work. It is solitary and often lonely work, taking great patience, in environments that are mostly luminous, sometimes inhospitable and more often, unpredictable.
While exploring themes of fragility and impermanence, the idea I wish to convey is for the viewer to form a subtle connection where natures resources are not limitless and the instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned.
The focus is based upon liminality, the threshold of in between, that middle space where surfaces meet and the order of things has been suspended.
Both residencies validated the need for eco based art, environmental advocacy, activism, outreach, protection of marine habitat, wildlife and informed my work during this timeframe."
