About Sara Baker Michalak
Sara Baker Michalak was born in Western New York State. After completing her formal education and extended travel she returned to work and raise a family. Involvements have been ongoing as a Teaching Artist and in arts administration as she continued developing her studio practice. For many years Sara served as an Art Facilitator for individuals with developmental disabilities, for Aspire of WNY. In addition to her visual art, Baker Michalak writes, is a student of land protection and restoration, and propagates native wildflowers. She exhibits her work widely, most recently in her Solo Exhibitions at the Crary Art Gallery, Warren PA (2021) and VIEW, Old Forge NY (2020). Institutions with Baker Michalak's work in their Permanent Collections include the Burchfield Penny Art Center in Buffalo NY, The Ontological Musem in Santa Fe, NM and Merz Gallery in Sanquihar UK. She enjoys engaging with fellow artists and viewers in nontraditional settings, and has joined with an enthusiastic community of international collagists who work independently, applying a wide range of collage works as 'art interventions' outside gallery walls.

Education
Baker Michalak received her BFA from the School of Fine and Applied Arts, Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester NY and MA, Interdisciplinary Studies (English and Geoscience) from SUNY Fredonia NY. She's attended a number of workshop residency intensives including at Haystack Mountain on Deer Isle, ME and Penland School of Crafts, Penland NC.

Baker Michalak was awarded Best of Show for her work by Juror Thomas Paquette in Roger Tory Peterson Institute's Plein Air Event in 2023. She has received numerous awards for her work exhibited with Buffalo Society of Artists, including First Place Award in the 2020 Spring Exhibition and Honorable Mention in the 123rd Catalogue Show, 2019. She received the People's Choice Award for her work in the inaugural Art in Science Exhibition, sponsored by the Science Center at SUNY Fredonia NY.

Baker Michalak's work appears in a number of group exhibition catalogues, including in Unconnected Yet at the Academy of Fine Arts Kolkata, India (2022); Corporeal Gestures at the Portland State University in Portland OR (2022); Art That Matters to the Planet at Roger Tory Peterson Institute, Jamestown NY (2022); and unfoldingobject, Concord Museum of Art Concord MA (2019). In addition her work is included in BSA's Annual Catalogue Exhibition catalogues. Wall Flowers: Collage as Street Art (authors Kasini Kadour, Kurts; 2022) includes Baker Michalak's installations, and she and her work are featured in Wild Roof Journal, Issue 3, 2020.
